Windows Home Server-2
June 30th, 2008
Windows Home Server is now fully active on my network.
My own personal network consists of roughly 4 computers.
The breakdown:
-Backup Server
-Desktop
-Laptop
-Windows Home Server
-Windows 2003 Server
Now, the Windows Home Server integration is like this, one centralized box that offers shared storage and a somewhat OS imaging backup solution.
Each client/pc is loaded with a WHS Connector client that allows the machine to communicate with the home server. This is done for the proposes of accessing shared files and also for backups. They key here is centralized management for all the pcs in your house. I only mention shares and backup as those are they key ones for me.
So far i am very pleased with the results. You are getting server side features and options for around $160 dollars.
The latest test version of WHS works for 120 days and there has just been a service pack released that addresses some of the issues that they were having, mainly being data corruption.
Note, i also keep the server and all shared storage backed up to a 2 Terabyte RAID 0 External enclosure. After all, backup works best in layers.
