No Cellphone for 8 Hours
September 22nd, 2009
I felt disconnected. My job requires me to have my device on me about 80% of the work week. Getting well over 50 emails that i need to reply to daily and monitoring critical servers alters that is added on top of that.
I had to send my phone in for repairs under warranty and didn’t have my secondary device on me. While running around the office and a few errands after work, i felt my self reaching for the phone. Needless to say, it was’t on me. It was a force of habitat i guess. Always checking for emails or the next task during a a few slow minutes during the day. I’ve come to rely heavily on my mobile device from the alarm clock feature to editing word attachments on the go.
It felt “out of whack” (for lack of better words) being disconnected for that period of time. It makes me wonder if i am too connected. I mean, its not the device, its what it gives me access to. This information we feel that we need at all times while being mobile. Information eh, always have to have acess to it no matter where we are.
However, this is something i accept in my field. I cannot get rid of it. This comes with my job and its one i accept. But, i just need to find the balance between being connected all the time and having that always needed down time.
End of bits.
